Meet Justin Mead: The Heart and Vision Behind Vegan Style
Justin established Vegan Style in 2010 and later started the in-house vegan fashion brand Zette, named after one of his foster cat fails. Justin's journey towards veganism was ignited by a profound moment witnessing a fish gasping for life and then cruelly stabbed, an experience that sparked a lifelong dedication to animal welfare. From starting his education on animal suffering after walking past an Animal Liberation stand to learning about the horrors of the dairy industry, his journey led him to embrace a fully vegan lifestyle in 2001. Even the tissue paper inside our in-house brand boxes is recycled. To further minimize waste, we repurpose stock boxes for large orders and avoid the production of needless marketing collateral. This exciting development marks a significant step forward in the brand's mission to provide environmentally friendly and cruelty-free footwear options for conscious consumers.

What is Corn Leather, and Why is it Sustainable?

In today's world, the demand for sustainable and ethical fashion choices is higher than ever before. Traditional animal-derived leather has been associated with cruelty and environmental harm, with a substantial climate impact and land footprint leading to biodiversity destruction. Zette Shoes recognises the need for more responsible alternatives, and one such solution is "corn leather."

Corn leather is composed primarily of plant-based materials, including corn husks and vegetable oils, making up over half of its total content. The remaining portion consists of synthetic substances, carefully blended with the plant-based ingredients. Corn, a key component of this material, grows from seed to harvest in approximately 120 days, significantly shorter than the time it takes to raise and slaughter animals for traditional leather production.

The process of creating corn leather involves fermentation and chemical transformation of harvested corn to extract dextrose, a natural sugar. This sugar is then transformed into a polymer fiber, melted, and molded into pellets, which are blended with synthetic materials to form a leather-like material. The resulting corn leather is both supple and sturdy, making it an ideal choice for crafting high-quality footwear.
